Vile Blue Shades – Adios amigos….

July 6, 2010

Everything eventually comes to an end and last night the collective, revolving quagmire that is the Vile Blue Shades called it the end of the road after playing one last show for Will’s birthday.   A little box on the interweb can no way capture the live show but here it is in all it’s blue tinted glory….

the random local – Tolchok Double Trio

June 28, 2010

Maybe I should say the monthly local from now on… A couple weeks back Dave Payne and Charlie Lewis joined the Tolchok Trio guys to kick off this year’s Downtown Farmers Market.  The weather was a little on the crappy side but they managed to pull off two sets on the City Weekly Music at the Market mini stage.

There’s some pretty  good wind noise on this one but it was pretty low tech,  a canon elph on a mini pod – it doesn’t sound to bad considering. Rumor has it they will be playing some more shows with this lineup, you should check it out.

Chevron feels ignored, contaminates a Salt Lake park pond

June 12, 2010

Unfortunately it’s not a headline from the Onion… When I went out for a run at Liberty Park today I was greeted by a couple sandwich board style barricades and a few feet of police caution tape, figured there were a couple down branches or something. After running about 30 yards down the trail I was flagged down by one of Salt Lake’s finest who informed me the park was closed, once he realized he was in cop mode he got a friendlier tone and said if I stayed on the woodchip trail that was cool. I asked what was up with the closure, he pondered for a minute then responded with a look as if he couldn’t even believe what he was saying, “the pond is contaminated.”

guess it's a low key closure

There wasn’t too much out of the ordinary at first other than a deserted park on a Saturday afternoon which was odd after about two blocks everything started to come into view.

never thought we'd be seeing this

Turns out a Chevron pipe had been leaking into Red Butte Creek since sometime late friday but apparently wasn’t noticed until this morning. In the meantime oil made it all the way down into the pond at Liberty Park.

According to an article in the Tribune oil streamed into the pond at Liberty Park and continued into the Jordan River. It was spotted as far north as 500 South and so far over 150 birds have been affected. It’s also reported that Chevron started receiving pressure warnings on friday but pretty much didn’t check into it until this morning.  If it wasn’t for a damn constructed by a Big D construction crew things could have been even worse.

It’s crazy how Wallyworld can inform a store manager within minutes if a refrigerator door is open for a few minutes but yet it takes these chuckleheads over nine hours to realize they are leaking 50 gallons a minute?? One of the guys on the cleanup crew said he thought the park would be able to get cleaned relatively quickly so that’s good but what about the three plus mile area in between the spill and the park? Who knows what the future holds.
Until then get used to seeing this for a while…

In the meantime, think about it before getting in your car the next time – it’s probably not that far of a bike ride or maybe even walking distance.

woah, back to back updates, even live with Red Bennies this time

April 22, 2010

UPDATE….Unfortunately you can’t watch the clips on iphones- or at least no as of now…..

After not keeping up with this for the dozen(s) who keep track, decided a rainy wednesday was a perfect time to try out this webcaster thing I’ve heard about. The Red Bennies were playing a record release type thing down at Urban so figured they would be a good test monkey. Didn’t realize there was a slight delay in recording to the server so it starts partway thru the first song, but what can you do..

For those of you who missed it either in person or on this interweb thing, you can check it out below. You can check the Plastic Furs in a lovely shade of blue and Cornered by Zombies as they slightly turn red at times. Hey, it’s the first go.

Yeah, so it’s not really weekly but….

April 21, 2010

it’s the local weekly and as always I’ve been slacking or actually spacing on this lately.

Yesterday morning Jay Henderson from Band of Annuals stopped by KRCL and played a couple of new songs, one of them have names yet so I suppose this is untitled number 3?

Ok, so it’s the random weekly local/local weekly- Tolchok Trio….

March 25, 2010

Still slacking on things, actually been kinda busy so haven’t been out and about lately so it’s another from the archives- Tolchok at Gallivan. Actually this one is thanks to gogo inflight wireless, on a flight to Reno for last USSA event of the year and remembered about a credit to try it out. But that’s neither here nor there, it is kinda rad to be able to watch stupid videos online while at 30,000 feet though.

This is also the double down, figure since I’m slacking might as well post two things that you may have missed.

First off is Tolchok Trio at Gallivan last year- for those who don’t know the much beloved Twilight Concert Series is making a mini road trip while the Galivan Center is getting a facelift, so now all of you who go to hang out and ignore the bands will be able to see what you aren’t paying attention to.

If you haven’t got a chance to go check them out yet, you should. Speaking of things that the people of SLC slept on was Mike Watt at Bar Deluxe. If you don’t know who Watt is then I probably don’t want to be your friend -I’m sure a large chunk of your BFF bands know who he is, OG all the way. Next time you hear one of his incarnations stops thru town do yourself a favor and swing by.

Before you stop by Bar Deluxe swing by Rice Fusion on State Street and get the Kung Pao Vegetarian Chicken it’s only 7 beans at lunch – super good yo.

Who knows, one day I might actually stay on top of this this thing.

Next up is City Dogs…

gots to go, need to shut down soon.

ok, so it’s the not so weekly local or local weekly – but here’s Andale!

March 8, 2010

Yeah, so I pretty much suck at keeping things up to date which I suppose is kindof the purpose of these things.  There was a lot going on up in Canadia and I got sidetracked then upon return to SLC had to locate my camera which took the scenic route home without me.  We’ve since been reunited just in time for it’s replacement to be delivered and finally making the switch to tapeless so maybe things might be sped up a bit.  We’ll see.

So enough with the excuses…. here’s something from the archives.  A couple months back Andale! played at Bar Deluxe opening for the Debi Graham Band here’s a version of “when you were mine” by Prince.  How can you not like Prince or Andale! for that matter…

let’s see if I can stay on top of things for at least a month.
