Things I forgot about pt1 – STARMY getting SLAMMY’d at the Zephyr

November 12, 2011

The title could actually mean many things, primarily that I still have this site floating around the interweb and should maybe post things or let it fade into oblivion.  During a recent move I decided to go thru some boxes of old miniDV tapes and I have a lot of them – not quite like the kid in American Beauty but close. The difference is instead of shots of floating plastic bags and the neighbor changing clothes (however, I did have a super cute neighbor a while back so that may have been a missed opportunity but that would have been a bit weird anywho I’m getting sidetracked…..)  I have a bunch of tapes of skate comps and local bands all shot in glorious 4×3 standard def.

One such tape is STARMY from the SLAMMY Awards at the Zephyr, the date stamp on it says Sept 2003 so going to go with that I do somewhat remember STARMY winning around then.  For those who don’t know, the Zephyr was one of the best places to see live bands in Salt Lake.  Morrisey kicked off a tour there and before they became self important jackasses, the Kings of Leon were a youngbuck opening band channeling the 70′s – bonus points for those who can name the band they opened for.   Sometime around 2004 it closed down to give the local rats and spiders a habitat with some much needed peace and quiet.

That’s my long winded story of, hey I found an old tape of STARMY at the Zephyr, here’s “Don’t look Back”

There’s a lot more random things I’m sure I’ll remember, hopefully I don’t forget to post them.

…oh yeah, one of them is JVC tapes suck

Randomly Randoms….’IMMORTAL’ :: New work by BEN BROWN (via The National Grid Gallery)

December 7, 2010

Been out of town for a couple weeks and haven’t gotten around to posting anything so here’s something from the opposite side of the globe that’s rad.
Darth looks a little on the thin side but will always have a bit of the inner Star Wars geekdom so it’s still a-ok with me, Clint is badass as always.

One of these days somewhat soon Spell Talk clip from Sugar Shack and from the archive clip with Night Sweats from Salty Streets.

'IMMORTAL' :: New work by BEN BROWN On show will be numbered and signed limited edition prints, plus original works in ink and paint. The show continues the themes of Bens previous solo show – ‘Kill your Idols’ – which combined celebrity, junk culture, zombies and skulls in a graphically charged visual extravaganza. These new works pick up where the previous show left off and the iconic images that are burned in to our collective cultural psyche are given a new life… albeit as th … Read More

Hey, it’s a library stop being so quiet -HSS live @ Music at Main

November 17, 2010

Throughout summer months, the City Library in downtown Salt Lake hosts it’s weekly live outdoor music series “Music at Main” but did you know it still happens once a month during the Fall/Winter months?  Yep, upstairs on Level four.   And you thought the fourth floor was just for Biographies, Special Collections and the 700-999 Dewey range Nonfiction section plus some internet computers and the Gallery @ Library Square…..shows what you know about your library.

On Tuesday November 16th you were probably home watching  Dancing With the Stars or One Tree hill or something when you could’ve been down at the Library checking out HSS otherwise known as Henderson (Band of Annuals), Sowards (The Black Hens) and Shaw (The Platte) not quite going to 11 but keeping it at a very appropriate level for a Gallery room in a Library.  After that you were probably eating wheat thins and watching the second half of the Biggest Loser instead of seeing a Devil Whale spawn Brinton Jones with some electric acoustic.

I think music reviews are kinda silly since music is such a vast universe where a fan base like this and dance moves like this have a place so like to post clips instead and let you decide for yourself.  And audio critics, yes there is a slight bit of a hissing hum which I chose not to remove so I apologize if it offends your ears.

ipeeps and other moblie types can see it here

This Is Brinton, if I get around to it I’ll post a clip of him soon as well

Side note, some of you may have been home watching Glee, I haven’t seen it but heard Gwyneth Paltrow was on last night, she’s rad so maybe if you have no means to watch it at a later date you get a pass.  I might even finally watch an episode myself.

When Rubes become Bubes

November 14, 2010

Last month KRCL held a “Stones in Exile” event at Brewvies as an early premium for their fall radiothon drive.  Following a screening of  the new Rolling Stones Documentary about the recording of Exile on Main Street locals the Rubes became The Bubes and busted out a set of covers from the album.

Shake your Hips is actually a Slim Harpo cover which I didn’t know but Scott was quick to give credit where credit is due afterwards, check it out…..

Menomena the Pelican

October 16, 2010

That would be an odd name for a pelican, it’s also an odd name for a band but they are rad and quite good live. The Pelican is actually the name of a Menomena song from 2007′s “Friend or Foe” and here’s a live version from The Urban Lounge
where they played on October 15th. Enjoy.

Oh yeah, it was a KRCL sponsored event.

Making up for lost time with weekly local – Sonic Youth

October 8, 2010

SInce the weekly local hasn’t been kept up to date figure I’ll make up for lost time this week and maybe even get the viewers into the dozens. Whenever networks are trying to get the ratings up for shows they do things like bring in special guests so guess I’ll give it a go….
Sonic Youth definitely aren’t local but they recently played a show at In the Venue here in Salt Lake City, not a fan of that place at all but they were good so can deal with it from time to time. Here’s “No Way” and “Calming the Snake” from their latest on Matador records “The Eternal.”

One thing for those in the crowd, when you go see a band you don’t really need to keep screaming the names of their “hits” I’m sure they know quite well what songs the masses agree with and will play them if they want to. Drawing pictures is more of a creative approach even if it doesn’t get your song played. More on that later……

Tofurky + Daiya = delicious

October 7, 2010

Tofurky sausages are super good and so is that fake cheese, or should it be cheeze(?), from Canadia also known as Daiya. Now they have joined forces in pizza form and are quite delicious.

Vile Blue Shades – Adios amigos….

July 6, 2010

Everything eventually comes to an end and last night the collective, revolving quagmire that is the Vile Blue Shades called it the end of the road after playing one last show for Will’s birthday.   A little box on the interweb can no way capture the live show but here it is in all it’s blue tinted glory….
