So enough with the excuses…. here’s something from the archives.  A couple months back Andale! played at Bar Deluxe opening for the Debi Graham Band here’s a version of “when you were mine” by Prince.  How can you not like Prince or Andale! for that matter…

let’s see if I can stay on top of things for at least a month.

and this one might be a bit ambitious but lets see how it goes.

The goal is to post a weekly clip from a local SLC band or sometimes possibly someone I think is rad playing a Salt Lake show.  A few weeks back Cub Country played the CWMA showcase at A Bar Named Sue, judging from the crowd it looked like unless you happened to be a Murryvale resident you probably missed it so here you go.

The next couple post will have to be from the archives as well, I’m currently up north at an event you may of  caught a glimpse of but I hear the coverage has been sporatic in the states. Unless you’re a fan of figure skating that is.

Earlier this year Leia Bell hosted ”This Aggression will not Stand Man“  a Big Lebowksi themed print exchange show at her Signed and Numbered gallery  in Salt Lake.  Matt Lloyd’s take on Jesus Quintana aka “the Purple Jesus” was one of the standouts of the show and help earn him a one man show at Signed and Numbered this month.  The main theme of the show is HBO’s “the Wire” series with each print highlighting a character from the show and a related quote. There’s also a sampling from his blues inspired pieces including Professor Longhair and Muddy Waters – you can also check out the Quintana piece, Obama/Lincoln mixandmashed and a few others.  Lloyd made it over to the States from his hometown in Brighton, UK and talked about the insperado and a few of his favorite characters.

Not quite sure how long the show runs but go check out the gallery before they head to their new digs in Sugarhouse and Kilby around the end of next month.

It’s rad to see shops like Slowtrain still going strong and supporting the scene, doesn’t hurt that they come from a solid stock somewhat.  If you’ve seen the random stinkweeds price stickers there, they are from Kimber Lanning’s record stores in Phoenix, AZ – from what I hear she consolidated back down to one store a couple years back to focus on other projects.  Lanning opened up shop in Mesa, AZ in the late 80’s  and has been in the mix supporting the local first ideology ever since.

Hopefully Slowtrain and 4th street as well have the same continued success as Stinkweeds – I spent many hours bugging Kimber about the newest Cruz releases and Manchester imports back during my ASU days and Philadelphia Record exchange for punk rock before that.  I’m the first to admit I’m guilty of the itunes purchases from time to time,  but nothing beats getting random new music based purely on album artwork or advice of whomever’s working.

Next time before you click on “download” or “buy now” take a ride down to your local shop and pick something up.  You know you’ll probably burn a copy for a friend anyways so might as well save one for yourself give them the original.

The Greek - ollie Summer '09

I’ve been asked quite a few times how I got a camera shot from underneath the Greek’s board this so here you go….

Jimmy “the Greek” (Emergency Skateboards, Ace Trucks & Bones rider)played the roll of test pilot and I mounted a ContourHD from vholdr onto his board.  The cams are pretty dope- they shoot 1280 x 720, have a 135º lens and record to a microSD card making it fully self-contained; i.e. no wires.  What sets it apart from other small cams in this category is the fact the lens rotates 180º in the housing so it’s super easy to mount – slap it on solid THEN level the horizon. No need to monkey around forever trying to get the mount level.  Actually have shots used on quite a few network broadcasts and Discovery channel Europe.

Would be nice to have a little more manual control but it does solid in daylight conditions.  There’s a 1080 version set to ship any time now so in addition to even higher res there’s also some control over contrast, exposure and audio gain – stoked to see how that all works.

So now you know, go out and steal my job.

The circle board was the focus of the exhibit, hence the name, and there were a couple versions of it on display as well as some video installations with it in action.  Was rather interesting to see Gonz watching himself on a screen with the board in the background and like all things he made it look easy.  Check out William Strobeck’s clip of Anthony Pappalardo giving it a go around New York.  Pops stopped by to check the exhibit out as did Ed Templeton, Jake Phelps (both were part of the MOMA deal) Jason Dill and quite a few others I’m forgeting right now.

In addition to the circle boards there’s also a collection of postcards, drawings and other random things Gonz has sent to Jocko Weyland  over the years.  If you get a chance check it out – the exhibit runs thru the end of the month.
