Things I forgot about pt1 – STARMY getting SLAMMY’d at the Zephyr

November 12, 2011

The title could actually mean many things, primarily that I still have this site floating around the interweb and should maybe post things or let it fade into oblivion.  During a recent move I decided to go thru some boxes of old miniDV tapes and I have a lot of them – not quite like the kid in American Beauty but close. The difference is instead of shots of floating plastic bags and the neighbor changing clothes (however, I did have a super cute neighbor a while back so that may have been a missed opportunity but that would have been a bit weird anywho I’m getting sidetracked…..)  I have a bunch of tapes of skate comps and local bands all shot in glorious 4×3 standard def.

One such tape is STARMY from the SLAMMY Awards at the Zephyr, the date stamp on it says Sept 2003 so going to go with that I do somewhat remember STARMY winning around then.  For those who don’t know, the Zephyr was one of the best places to see live bands in Salt Lake.  Morrisey kicked off a tour there and before they became self important jackasses, the Kings of Leon were a youngbuck opening band channeling the 70′s – bonus points for those who can name the band they opened for.   Sometime around 2004 it closed down to give the local rats and spiders a habitat with some much needed peace and quiet.

That’s my long winded story of, hey I found an old tape of STARMY at the Zephyr, here’s “Don’t look Back”

There’s a lot more random things I’m sure I’ll remember, hopefully I don’t forget to post them.

…oh yeah, one of them is JVC tapes suck

Calexico and going against the recommended settings

August 11, 2011

Killing some time so figure I should maybe put something on here again……Shooting video on DSLRs can be rad and also a bit frustrating at times since what looks good on little screens and monitors isn’t necessarily that great when viewed larger.  A guy named Tyler writes a blog about all things video and wrote what appears to be a really good article about what shutter and other settings to use and not use for best video.  I learned a bit there,  I also know that when shooting at places like the Urban Lounge for clips that will just wind up on the interweb for about 72 people to watch all this info can pretty much be tossed out the window like a banana peel.

It’s been a bit since Calexico has been around Utah, in the past they have played at the Twilight Series, Red Butte and Kingsbury Hall so was a bit surprised to see the Urban listing, was rad to see them in a smaller venue even though the still don’t play Convict Pool much anymore (this video is kinda rad)-  they did bust out a little Alone again Or, it’s been covered a bounch but their version is up there almost as good as the Damned‘s- if you didn’t know it’s an old Love song.

Oh yeah, it was shot with a Canon 60D, Canon 16-35 2.8L lens, with a Sennheiser MKE 400 and the ghetto man’s handheld rig- a mini ball head/quick release combo with a superclamp for a bit of counter balance. It’s never good to go with too high of an iso but since this isn’t meant for much more than this webclip went with 640iso and a 30 shutter even though was shooting 1080/24 but it made the light stop flickering. TechhShmeck whatever…

if you’re still wasting time watch this….

Menomena the Pelican

October 16, 2010

That would be an odd name for a pelican, it’s also an odd name for a band but they are rad and quite good live. The Pelican is actually the name of a Menomena song from 2007′s “Friend or Foe” and here’s a live version from The Urban Lounge
where they played on October 15th. Enjoy.

Oh yeah, it was a KRCL sponsored event.

S.L.F.M. – providing you with your daily dose of Ukulele

October 11, 2010

So if you’re like me you probably think to yourself there just really isn’t enough electric ukulele music these days nor are there ample opportunities for adding mustaches to video clips. Luckily S.L.F.M. decided to do something about these things, if you haven’t seen or heard yet descriptions are a bit tough but the obligatory myspace page sums it up with “A girl, a ukulele, and a moustache.” Definitely interesting, so much so S.L.F.M. recently earned the lone opening spot for Sonic Youth when they played In the Venue.

Making up for lost time with weekly local – Sonic Youth

October 8, 2010

SInce the weekly local hasn’t been kept up to date figure I’ll make up for lost time this week and maybe even get the viewers into the dozens. Whenever networks are trying to get the ratings up for shows they do things like bring in special guests so guess I’ll give it a go….
Sonic Youth definitely aren’t local but they recently played a show at In the Venue here in Salt Lake City, not a fan of that place at all but they were good so can deal with it from time to time. Here’s “No Way” and “Calming the Snake” from their latest on Matador records “The Eternal.”

One thing for those in the crowd, when you go see a band you don’t really need to keep screaming the names of their “hits” I’m sure they know quite well what songs the masses agree with and will play them if they want to. Drawing pictures is more of a creative approach even if it doesn’t get your song played. More on that later……

It’s been a while so…..Joshua Payne Orchestra @ KRCL

October 4, 2010

Yeah, I’m not very good at this whole blogging thing but here’s something new for the first time in a few months – Joshua Payne Orchestra from their Live at FIve performance at KRCL during Bad Brad Wheeler’s show.

If you haven’t caught the full nine piece orchestra live you really should, they’re quite good and now playing Thursdays at Manhattan. Oh yeah, the video’s a cover of Usher’s OMG” and by the way, you should go to KRCL.org and pledge a few bucks. word

the random local – Tolchok Double Trio

June 28, 2010

Maybe I should say the monthly local from now on… A couple weeks back Dave Payne and Charlie Lewis joined the Tolchok Trio guys to kick off this year’s Downtown Farmers Market.  The weather was a little on the crappy side but they managed to pull off two sets on the City Weekly Music at the Market mini stage.

There’s some pretty  good wind noise on this one but it was pretty low tech,  a canon elph on a mini pod – it doesn’t sound to bad considering. Rumor has it they will be playing some more shows with this lineup, you should check it out.

woah, back to back updates, even live with Red Bennies this time

April 22, 2010

UPDATE….Unfortunately you can’t watch the clips on iphones- or at least no as of now…..

After not keeping up with this for the dozen(s) who keep track, decided a rainy wednesday was a perfect time to try out this webcaster thing I’ve heard about. The Red Bennies were playing a record release type thing down at Urban so figured they would be a good test monkey. Didn’t realize there was a slight delay in recording to the server so it starts partway thru the first song, but what can you do..

For those of you who missed it either in person or on this interweb thing, you can check it out below. You can check the Plastic Furs in a lovely shade of blue and Cornered by Zombies as they slightly turn red at times. Hey, it’s the first go.

The long delayed weekly local or local weekly- Cub Country

February 18, 2010

Suppose there’s not much to these things if one never actually posts anything so here’s something…

and this one might be a bit ambitious but lets see how it goes.

The goal is to post a weekly clip from a local SLC band or sometimes possibly someone I think is rad playing a Salt Lake show.  A few weeks back Cub Country played the CWMA showcase at A Bar Named Sue, judging from the crowd it looked like unless you happened to be a Murryvale resident you probably missed it so here you go.

The next couple post will have to be from the archives as well, I’m currently up north at an event you may of  caught a glimpse of but I hear the coverage has been sporatic in the states. Unless you’re a fan of figure skating that is.
